Elk sits about thirty miles north of Spokane and ten north of Deer Park, where the open plateau starts giving way to the Selkirk foothills. Large parcels, few neighbors, and roads you do not end up on by accident. Two things follow from that, and both are about planning rather than painting. The first is materials. On a job in town, running short of a primer costs half an hour. Out here it costs most of a day, and if a crew is making that decision at four in the afternoon the temptation is to finish with what is on the truck instead. That is how the wrong product ends up on a wall. We would rather over-specify what comes with us and take some back than improvise on site, and we would rather tell you a job needs another visit than quietly substitute something. The second is the season, which is genuinely short here. The elevation and the mountains bring late spring frosts and early autumn cold snaps, and the dependable exterior window at Elk is roughly June through August — not the May-to-September you would get in the valley, and appreciably tighter than Deer Park. Three months is not much room, so exterior work here wants booking well ahead rather than arranged in July. Interiors are unaffected and run all year, which is worth knowing if the outside has already missed its window. The practical upside is that we are the next community south. For a Spokane contractor Elk is an expedition with a travel premium attached. For us it is a short run up the road, which is the whole reason we can treat it as ordinary work.
