Painters for Millwood's Mill-Era Homes

Millwood is one of the smallest incorporated cities in the county — around 1,700 people on the Spokane River, grown up around the paper mill that has run here since 1911. The core neighborhoods are older than most of the Valley: craftsman bungalows, small colonials, and modest houses built when the mill was the center of the town. Houses of that age nearly all have wood sash windows, and after eighty or ninety years and a dozen repaints a great many of them have been painted shut. It happens gradually and almost always through carelessness rather than intent — paint bridges the gap between the sash and the frame, dries, and glues the two together. Add a few coats and the window is a fixed panel. That is not a cosmetic complaint: windows that do not open are a ventilation problem in summer and, in a bedroom, an egress problem in a fire. Freeing them is genuinely careful work, which is why it usually gets skipped. The joint has to be cut cleanly so the seal breaks along the paint line rather than tearing the surface off the sash or the stop, and old sash is often more fragile than it looks. Where a window has been painted shut for decades there is frequently failed glazing putty behind it too, which is a real repair rather than something a topcoat covers. What we will not do is quietly paint over a stuck window and hand it back stuck — if freeing it is outside what you want to spend, we will tell you it is stuck and leave the decision with you rather than making it silently. The rest is what you would expect on houses this age: layered paint that needs assessing before another coat joins it, and the river valley keeping north elevations damper and shadier than the uplands nearby, which shows up as growth on the sides that get least sun.
