Spangle sits on the open Palouse about twenty-five miles south of Spokane — a grain elevator, a small cluster of houses, and wheat ground in every direction. Most of the homes are older wood-framed places, and the maintenance history varies enormously depending on whether the family's attention has been on the house or on the land. The exposure story here is the same one that applies across the Palouse: no trees, no neighboring buildings, nothing to break the wind, so south and west elevations take a punishing UV and wind load and wear out well ahead of the sheltered sides. That is real, but it is not what distinguishes Spangle. What does is the terrain right around town. Cold air is heavy and it drains downhill overnight, pooling in low ground — so properties down in the Spangle Creek drainage can sit several degrees colder after dark than places on the rise a short distance away. That is a frost pocket, and it means two houses a few minutes apart genuinely do not share an exterior painting season. In spring the low ground comes good later; in autumn it goes cold first. Since exterior coatings need overnight temperatures to stay above their minimum to form a film properly, this is not a detail — it is the difference between a coat that sets and one that never quite does. In practice it means we ask where a property sits before we commit to a date, and we would rather move a low-lying job by two weeks than paint it into a cold night and have the result be someone's problem in three years.
