Valleyford sits in the Palouse transition country south of Spokane, where wheat ground starts giving way to timber. Some of the farmhouses here go back to the early twentieth century, and they have been repainted more times than anyone still living can count. On houses like that the failure is almost never in the middle of a board. It is at the joinery: the tops and bottoms of window and door casings, the mitred corners, the ends of trim boards where the grain runs out to open air. End grain drinks water many times faster than a board's face does, and on a house repainted six or seven times those cut ends have usually been given a quick brush-over each cycle without ever being properly sealed. Water gets in behind, sits in the timber, and pushes the coating off from underneath — which looks like paint failing and is really water management failing. That is why we walk the trim before quoting rather than measuring wall area and multiplying. It is also why a farmhouse quote from us sometimes includes carpentry, or a recommendation to get some done first. There is no coating that fixes rotten end grain, and painting over it buys a season or two at most. The other Valleyford reality is film build. Siding carrying six or seven coats behaves differently from siding carrying two — the layers move against each other with temperature and start letting go together, and at that point spot-patching is money thrown away because the new coat is only ever as sound as the oldest layer beneath it.
